Spectra Arts

Spectra is a community of adult NWA Christian Artists - photographers, painters, graphic designers, and writers of prose and poetry—all with the same goals. We seek to fellowship with like-minded artisans to collaborate and create art as a way to praise, inspire and foster spiritual growth. Spectra also hosts themed gallery exhibits regularly with the hope of inspiring the viewer toward deeper reflection on scripture. Below is the art displayed at all three campuses reflecting the current teaching series. For more information or to purchase art listed below, contact:

Psalm 91:2 | a Psalm of Trust

Oil over Acrylic

This is a painting of my neighbor's barn after an EF-4 tornado tore through our rural community on March 14, 2025.

And just as the flowers in the painting provide a point of hope in the face of destruction, so does the word of God provide a point of hope in the aftermath of life's storms for all who believe.

AS FAR AS EAST IS FROM THE WEST

Psalm 103: 11-12, 15-17, a Psalm of Praise

Watercolor, Pen & Ink

On a recent trip to the Netherlands my husband and I took a bike ride one early spring morning alongside a row of old windmills. As we watched the beautiful sun rise in the east, winds blew through the windmill sails in the sky. Tall grasses beside the water and small wildflowers in bloom danced in the cool breeze and time stood still. I felt a very present, creative and artistic God and I couldn’t wait to capture His presence with dozens of photos that I would later share through artworks.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills…”

Although ascending natural mountains can seem a bit formidable and remind us of difficult spiritual and life challenges, our God is greater still!

Psalm 37:1-2, Psalm of Imprecation

Watercolor | 8 x 10

We struggle through difficult situations. We look around and see the wicked flourishing like vibrant Spring flowers in their prime. Where is God? Inside you. Guiding you. Delighting in every detail of your life. Rescuing you from the wicked.

IN THE FIELDS

Psalm 103:15-17, a Psalm of Praise

Gouache and Acrylic

In a massive field I found it-

a flower, planted just for me.

No one else would ever see it-

for all eternity.

There that day, prostrate I fell,

to spy an inch of land.

A world of life, there I beheld

a flower by His hand.

A violet small, young and secure

before the wind could blow.

Everlasting is His love-

why does He love us so?

As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, And its place acknowledges it no longer. But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children, Psalm 103: 15-17

INK OF AFFLICTION

Psalm 13, a Psalm of Lament

Pen, Ink and Charcoal on Watercolor Paper

After the loss of our twin daughters, I came across this quote by Octavius Winslow:

"David's pen never wrote more sweetly than when dipped in the ink of affliction.“

In Psalm 13, David expresses his feelings of distress and despair when he feels abandoned by God, questioning why God is not helping him and why he is suffering. He expresses his pain and frustration, then eventually finds a way to trust in God's faithfulness. David ultimately sings praises for His deliverance. I chose this psalm because my own heart has mirrored David's in this psalm. David's psalms of lament are still ministering to our hearts. They are still teaching us how to lament and that lamenting is part of our experience.

How comforting it is that the Lord preserved David's penned words for us!

Psalm 17:8, a Psalm of Lament

Reverse Acrylic on Glass

Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 17:8 niv

In Psalm 17, David is crying out to the Lord, to protect and vindicate him from his enemies. He reminds God and us that when we call out to God, He hears us and answers and shows us His great love. The word picture that David paints is that God keeps us at the center of His attention, the pupil- the apple of his eye; and He will shelter us under His wings.

Psalm 8, a Hymn of Praise

Watercolor | 16x20

I wanted to create a whimsical abstract scene from Psalm 8. The rainbows represent the connection between heaven and earth. Creation calls out His name around you. Do you view yourself crowned with glory and honor?

MY SOUL WAITS

Psalm 62: 5-8, a Psalm of Trust

Original Song

As I was meditating on this Psalm, throughout the day I found myself singing a version of verse 5: “My soul waits in silence and rest”. Today, the chorus continues to help me settle down and relax when I get anxious or begin to think I’m not doing enough for the kingdom. Matthew 6:10 “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” reminds me Jesus is in charge of bringing the kingdom. I can wait and rest and trust Him with everything.

Psalm 32:8, a Psalm of Confession

Original Acrylic & Gouache on Wood

I will instruct you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Ps 32:8

When toddlers learn to walk, they rely on their parents as they begin to stumble. We have all stumbled with sin in our walks with Christ, yet we commit our lives to Him. If we turn to Him, He steadies our path and encourages us to continue walking in faith.

Painted on wood, the textured grain adds warmth to the scene. Using both acrylic and gouache thinned with an acrylic medium, I used radiant color to bring the figures to life with emotional intensity and light and to capture the sacredness of Ordered Steps that Christ provides believers - physical and spiritual.

OUR OMNIPRESENT CREATOR

Psalm 139: 7-14, a Psalm of Praise

Acrylic & Cross Stitch | 8 x 10

In the passage, David poses a rhetorical question: “where can I go from your Spirit?” He follows it up with “surely the darkness will hide me”. David knew our God is omnipresent.

God knows and sees us no matter where we try to hide. David furthers this point by saying “[God] created my inmost being; [God] knit me together in my mother’s womb”. God knows us intimately as He created us. We cannot hide ourselves from Him. I portrayed this idea by contrasting someone hiding in darkness and shame, with the second image of someone running to the arms of Jesus in the light of day. I used cross-stitch for the people to represent that we are knitted together by our Creator regardless of which position we choose to take.

Psalm 51, a Psalm of Confession

Original Poetry

I was struck by David’s raw, emotional, repentant confession that is Psalm 51. When starting out to write a prayer based on the Psalm, a poem emerged as I processed my own emotions. The prayer of Examen has helped me in a regular confession of sin to God as well as recall His beauty and presence each day. God’s forgiveness, restoration, and standing invitation to boldly approach the throne of grace draws me to maintain a right relationship, where I am honestly free and eternally loved.

Psalm 93: 3-5, a Royal Psalm

Acrylic

Psalm 93 is classified as a Royal Psalm (specifically one of the “enthronement psalms.”) These psalms celebrate God’s Kingship—His sovereign rule over creation and His eternal reign.

This piece depicts the power of the sea to transform the shoreline, chipping away at rock until something new is revealed. Like the psalmist’s comparison of the Lord to the ocean, God is mighty and capable of affecting great change in His time because He cares for you.

Psalms of Lament

Oil on Canvas

This painting draws from the Psalms of lament, portraying the tension between human frailty and divine presence. Clasped hands emerge from a muted palette of earth tones, grounded in sorrow and longing. A thin stream of white water descends toward them, symbolizing an ethereal thread of hope, mercy, or presence. The contrast between dust and water reflects the sacred dialogue between lament and grace, death and life.

TREE OF LIFE

Psalm 1:1-3; a Psalm of Wisdom

Embroidery

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law, day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither-whatever they do prospers. Psalm 1:1-3

The tree in my piece of art represents my life. Jesus chose me to follow Him. At the right time and the right place, He picked me. Christ Jesus planted the seed of faith in my heart, and I began my journey of growth.
